The Outer Hebrides Climate Hub is hosting a free webinar this month, with three fantastic speakers to joining us to discuss plastics and our climate, and how we’re tackling plastic waste here in the Western Isles.
Plastics are having a devastating impact on our natural environment – from their creation from fossil fuels, the greenhouse gas emissions they generate throughout their life cycle, and their harmful presence in wildlife habitats.
What to Expect?
Climate Hub Engagement Officer Sarah Longbottom will guide us through the current plastics crisis, including Scotland’s vulnerability as a coastal nation, and look at how we deal with plastics here in the Outer Hebrides. Sarah will also consider the change and innovations bringing hope for a brighter future, and personal and community action we can all take to make a difference.
We are also delighted to be joined by Sarah Morrison of Boshan CIC; Sarah will discuss how Boshan reuses, repairs, and recycles toys in Stornoway, including how she is able to divert plastic toy waste away from landfill and contribute to creating a more circular, local economy based on sustainability.
Sarah MacLean, Manager at Bùth Bharraigh community shop and visitor hub, will introduce us to their Beach Toy Library, available for visitors to Barra and Vatersay and reducing the number of toys visitors buy for use just a few times while on holiday.
Plastic@Bay CIC co-founder Joan D’Arcy will also join us, to talk about their project to tackle marine plastic pollution, and share opportunities for other organisations to become involved.
Following our speakers, there will be some facilitated discussion, giving you the chance to ask questions and to share any challenges and opportunities you have experienced.
Finally, we’ll be highlighting the launch of the 2026 Ideas Into Action Fund – the Climate Hub’s seed funding, available for small climate-friendly projects across the Western Isles. We’ll discuss some example projects, which you can use to inspire your own Ideas Into Action Fund applications!
