Community organisations, food producers, decision-makers and the public will come together later this month to discuss how the Outer Hebrides can strengthen its local food systems at the Outer Hebrides Food Resilience Summit on Thursday 26 March.
Hosted by Climate Hebrides and the Outer Hebrides Climate Hub, the summit will run from 10am to 4.30pm and will bring together local growers, food producers, retailers and community organisations to explore the role of food resilience and building stronger island communities.
The event will raise awareness of the importance of producing and sourcing food locally while highlighting the opportunities, challenges and innovations shaping the future of food in the Outer Hebrides.
The day will be divided into three themed sessions focusing on food production, food networks and sustainable innovation. Each session will also include panel discussions, Q&As and workshops to effect change and amplify local voices.
The event will include numerous engaging presentations, with speakers from Climate Hebrides, Croft 44 Ranish, Bùth Barraigh, Hebridean Charcuterie and many more. National butchery consultant, Rich Summers of Summers & Co, will also be attending the event, discussing the importance of local meat processing and collaboration.
“Building food resilience is of the utmost importance across the Outer Hebrides, particularly given our changing climate. Increased storm days are resulting in more ferry cancellations, with shops going without fresh food deliveries for days on end.” said Kirsty Leese, Manager of the Outer Hebrides Climate Hub.
“It’s crucial that we support local food systems to adapt to the changing climate, build resilience and support the local economy and wider environment.”
The event will take place in person at the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES) offices in Stornoway and will also be available to join online via Microsoft Teams. Lunch will be provided for in-person participants, though capacity for in-person attendance is limited.
The summit will help spark new collaborations and further practical actions to strengthen local food networks and ensure the Outer Hebrides is better prepared for future challenges.
